The Moody Blues: Albums Ranked Worst to Best
The time has finally come for me to do another ranking on a non-electronic band I really like, except this time it's for a band I don't think gets talked about these days nearly as often as they should, so I ended up going even more in-depth.

STS9's first new full album of original material in over half a decade may be designed specifically for the light show at their Red Rocks sets last year, but it's plenty of fun as a standalone album anyway, and it gave me the perfect excuse to refamiliarize myself with their back catalog and go more in-depth on it. Porter Robinson takes a swerve into a 2000s indie rock influenced sound while attempting to deconstruct his relationship with his own fanbase through lots of passive-aggressive "ironic" humor, that for me personally ended up as his least likeable and most difficult-to-stomach work to date. Having Tangram at No 2 tells me you come at their work from a radically different place to me. To put Exit at No 1 and yet White Eagle next to Le Parc, reinforces my opposing position to yours. Here's mine: 1. Ricochet - Sublime. Despite not being truly live. 2. Rubycon - A real journey 3. Phaedra - Seminal but rougher than Rubycon 4. White Eagle - Polished. Great sound design with nods to the past 5. Exit - Brilliant departure from 70's. Thanks to Wolfgang Palm 6. Poland - Tour-de-force of their recent material 7. Force Majeure - A refreshing break from the usual, fab recording 8. Stratosfear - Haunting yet more structured 9. Logos - Precursor to Poland, good melodies 10. Sorcerer - Brutal, except for The Journey which might be my favorite piece of the whole body of work 11. Zeit - Deep 12. Atem - An interesting, raw foreshadowing of their later 70's work 13. Encore - Raw but worthwhile 14. Le Parc - Good melodies/sound design, but the herald of change for the worse. 15. Hyperborea - No Man's Land interesting, but the rest, not so much 16. Cyclone - All Peter Baumann's fault! 17. Alpha Centauri - Weird but interesting 18. Electronic Meditation - You have to start somewhere I suppose. 19. Tangram - Confused and tentative. Welcome Johannes Schmoelling 20. Underwater Sunlight - Muzak

Despite being my favourite Orbital album, I understand the hate. I get that this is not what Orbital is suppose to sound. Everyone expected something masterful like Insides or Sniv but they got is an album filled with drafts and experiments. The experimental nature is what makes it my fave album since the brothers were coming out of their comfort zone. I feel like the brothers were backpedalling, intentionally creating the album and saying it sucks just because it got poor reviews. I like the fridge brilliance about the bookend and juxtaposition thing. My fave music is Funny Break (one of my top orbital songs). My least fave is Oi (I think the kazoo and sax are annoying)

Since you asked about what to highlight about this album as to why not put in into dead last ranking next to Experinece, it's easily explained as stylistic preference. Experience to me is wimpy. Dated. Chipmunky. Weak pippty beats. I don't want someone walking in and catching me listening to it. Later Prodigy has BALLS. It punches you in the face. It's exciting. But this goes back to what we prefer and your reviews explain why you prefer what you do and my preferences are different. I was born and I grew up with metal and had to branch out to electronic music, and blah blah blah you get it. You grew up differently and I salute our differences.

Great stuff. My own ranking would literally be their discography in order, with the blip of Strange Times being slightly better than expected at the end, and ignoring The Magnificent Moodies which I kind of think of as a different band (a la Underworld). The first three in particular are utterly magnificent, getting that mix of the cosmic and the mundane absolutely spot on. Their mix of almost painful earnestness and naivety has made them be remembered as a properly uncool band (not helped by those 80s records), so it’s always nice to come across others so passionately into them. I remember being amazed by the cover of Threshold as a kid and then listening to In the Beginning and it just being so totally bonkers; the reprise of the opening drone at the end of the album continues into the runout groove on the LP and that fascinated me, too, effectively an infinite track. Such a formative record.

I’ve only heard Days of Future Past in its entirety, but I’m goad you gave it such mad high praise. I feel like this is particularly fantastic 1967 production, the orchestra parts sounds clean by 2024 standards, let alone then. Not a lot of people were making concept albums like this back then in the first place and it’s just a fun experience with ambition that honestly didn’t strike me as all that pretentious tbh, but I can still see that I suppose I’ve only heard many songs outside of context otherwise, this group is awesome from what I’ve heard.

I saw the #1 coming from a mile away but it didn't make it any less satisfying to finally hear you talk about it in detail, which goes for basically everything on this list too. Also I'm glad your fanbase isn't as extreme as Fantano's because if it was, I'm willing to bet there would probably be people on Twitter right now talking about how OMG OMG DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED IS A 10 IN THE WONKY ANGLE CANON (although it arguably does deserve a reaction like that considering how much more frugal you are with your 10s than he is)

I loved this album, but I was only "kind of" a fan before it. Or a lost fan perhaps. I used to absolutely love Middle Of Nowhere. That was one of my favorite albums of all time back then, and still is. Unfortunately I fell out of the Orbital sphere with The Alltogether. I couldn't get into it, but after listening to your thoughts on it I'd like to go and re-listen to it. My feeling at the time wasn't that it was crazier and more mental, but strangely more that it felt they were trying to be more commercial and mainstream but kind of failed. I remember the reviews weren't very good. Optical Delusion to me was a return to what I loved with Middle Of Nowhere, so for me it was one of my favorite albums last year. But that said, I've really been quite out of the loop with Orbital.

At the time of writing this comment, I just recently got BT’s first three albums on CD with one of my Amazon vouchers! All of them are in my top three, currently with Ima and ESCM being tied for first place (sometimes I think Ima is better than ESCM, but that can change quickly depending on my mood). As for his other albums, I don’t really like his more modern stuff that much, but if I had to choose my favourite from that period, These Hopeful Machines definitely wins it all for me!

you mean the "transcendental jazz" thing he just released? pretty sure that's just a comp of old material, more than half of the tracks on it are directly pulled from his first two albums in the 90s
